Kumarakom

Kumarakom is located in the state of Kerala in the southwestern part of India and is one of the most scenic backwater destinations in all of the state. A holiday in Kumarakom is one of the best gifts that you can reward yourself or your loved ones with. This town set in the scenic emerald backwaters with exotic flora and fauna, wide spread lake, houseboat rides and moderate climate makes a Kumarakom holiday much more special than the others you might have had.

Attractions In and Around
Kumarakom tourism is one of the main revenue generators therefore a lot has been done to either preserve or promote it. There is a lot to keep you occupied when in this beautiful holiday destination that they call “Gods Own Country”. Some of the attractions that would interest you when here are:-

Vembanad lake- Kumarakom is located on the banks of this lake therefore it is a must see and explore destination. This scenic lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in all of Kerala. This lake with its canals, lagoons, brooks and waterways makes it a great place to spend a lazy afternoon cruising around in a houseboat that you can hire. This lake is also home to a large diversity of migratory and indigenous bird species which makes a great pastime activity.

Aruvikkuzhui waterfalls- this waterfall is located at a distance of about 18 kilometers from the town and is known to be one of the famed waterfalls of the entire country. This waterfall also acts as a picnic spot for people who want to get away from the busy schedules of daily life and spend some quality time with their loved ones. The waterfall cascades from a height of 100 feet which is a grand sight to see.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary- this is a great place to walk around and feel one with the nature. Since the lake is home to numerous migratory birds, this sanctuary provides them with a place to nest. One needs to visit in the proper season to watch different varieties of birds else one can spot only a few of the indigenous bird species.

Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple- this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is a great place to visit and offer your respects. The main attraction of the temple is the oil lamp which has never been extinguished. If you are visiting here you should take oil as an offering as it is helps in keeping the lamp burning.
Activities to Indulge In
Cruises- this is one of the most famed activities in all of Kumarakom. Take a cruise along the winding backwaters in a traditional houseboat or a canoe enjoying the rustic view of life that people live here. This is an experience you will never forget for the beauty and serenity of the sights that greet you will enchant you forever.

Walk in the bird sanctuary- The bird sanctuary is home to a vibrant species of birds that are migratory and indigenous. Walk in the shade of the tall trees and listen to the calls and songs of these beautiful birds. Remember to carry binoculars to spot the birds that are camouflaged against the leaves of the tall trees.

There are many hotels to stay in when in Kumarakom. To wine and dine some of the best known restaurants are Pearl Spot restaurant ( Kumarakom North Kottayam), Coconut Creek (New Nazarath Road), Oottupura Caters ( near Vadakkumara temple).

Getting In
The nearest airport is of Cochin which is located at a distance of 85 kilometers from Kumarakom. From the airport you can take a taxi or a bus to reach Kumarakom.

The nearest railway station is the Kottayam railway station which is located at a distance of 16 kilometers from town.
