Built in 594 AD, the Edappally St
George church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It is also known as St
George’s Syro-Malabar
Catholic Forane Church or Edapally church. It is located
at a distance of 10 kms from Cochin. The history of this church is as long as
fourteen centuries, even before the nation Indian was formed, or for that
matter even Cochin. During that time only a small hamlet of Edapally existed
which belonged to the princely kingdom of Elangalloor. People there lived a
very simple and a peaceful life and most of them were Hindus. They were later
converted to Christianity by St. Thomas the Apostle. He had come to India with
the sole purpose of teaching the gospel. As the population of this place grew
the old church became small and hence a new church was constructed in 1080 AD.
The altar of the new church had the picture of Virgin Mary surrounded by sculptures,
angels and vines. There is also a painting of heaven behind the altar which
fills one’s heart with unlimited joy and happiness. The façade which was
renovated is now being restored to the old one and the foundation stone for
this was laid by none other than Pope John Paul II.
The
most important festival celebrated out here is the feast of St. George which is
celebrated from the 23rd of April and lasts till the 15th of May. On 3rd and
4th of May the annual feast of St. George of Octave is celebrated and the
octave on the 10th and 11th May. Before the feast there is 40 hours of
adoration and 9 days of novena. People from different parts of the country and
state come here to attend this feast and pay their homage their god and saints.
