Bekal

Bekal the small town located on the western coast of Kerala is one of the most frequented places by tourists. This town has a wide diversity of places to visit that range from sand filled beaches, hillside destinations, backwaters and water sports.
These diversified activities are what make Bekal holidays a special one.
The fort that is located here too is a popular place of tourist and historical importance. This holiday destination is one that can be visited to relax, rejuvenate and unwind.

Historical Significance
The town of Bekal may not have much of historical significance however the fort that is built here has a huge one. This fort was built by Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore during 1650 AD.  The town of Bekal in the erstwhile days came under the rule of Mushika Royal family who used it as an important maritime outpost and therefore became an important port town.

Tourist Attractions
Tourism flourishes in this small port town and the number of visitor it gets every year is high due to the many attractions it has to offer. Some of the activities to indulge in when here are:
Bekal Beach- this sand filled beach surrounded by grassy fields and the unending expanse of sea is a great place to relax and unwind. The grassy field that surrounds the beach is a great place for families to have a picnic and pass time just admiring nature. The beach is a great place to take leisurely walks and spend some quiet time.

Bekal fort- this particular fort with its unique keyhole shaped structure is a great place to visit. This fort is the largest fort in Kerala and is a well visited one. Some of the important features of the fort include its water tank, the observation tower, the wide steps, the magazine for ammunition storage, places where cannons could be mounted etc. This particular fort is so large that it spreads an area of 40 acres and has spectacular views of the Arabian Sea.

Valiyaparamba backwaters- the emerald backwaters and the houseboats that are plying over them make a great sight to see. One should definitely take a cruise down these backwaters and visit the nearby islands. Spending a night on the houseboat is also a great experience. Dinner and Tea are served onboard the house boat and the delicacy you would want to taste are the freshly caught fishes from the very backwaters you are cruising on.

Kappil Beach- this particular beach is a rocky one where swimming is prohibited as it is very dangerous due to the strong currents. The sunsets here however are picturesque and beautiful. One should definitely have his camera on hand to capture them on film.
Nityanandashram Caves- these caves are a great place to visit and detach yourself from the business of the world.

Accommodations and Eateries
Since in Bekal tourism plays a major role the numbers of hotels are many. You can find hotels that range from budget to luxury, making it convenient to choose from. Some of the well known hotels and resorts here are Vivanta by Taj, Hotel Bekal Palace, Nirvana, Raj Residency, Woodside hotel, The Lalit resort and Spa etc.
To eat in some of the best places in Bekal are Gastrobio Shalimar, Shiv Sagar, Ideal cafe, Hotel Ganesh Bhavan restaurant etc. 

Getting In
One can reach Bekal via roadways after alighting from the train or airplane. The nearest airport is that of Mangalore and Karipur International airports which are located at a distance of 60 and 180 km each respectively.
The nearest railway station is that of Kasargod and Kanhangad which are around 12 kilometres from Bekal.
