New Battalion of Police to Be Raised For the Tourists in Jammu and Kashmir

With the number of visitors growing in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government is considering to elevate a new battalion of tourist police to deal in a ‘humane way’.
Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Minister of tourism said PTI, “We have few tourist police officers to deal with the tourists and we have considered elevating a new battalion to deal with the tourists more humanely.”

He also said, “We have written to the Chief Minister and the Home Department to either permit us to recruit the force directly or prepare a battalion from the regular police.”
However he said that the department believes that employment of fresh people will be better than preparing regular police.

Talat Prevez, Director Tourism, said, “We have about 72 officers appointed in the department out of the approved 106 posts. As new tourist destinations are increasing, the number of tourists are also increasing, even 106 posts is proving to be inadequate.”

Prevez said that the department feels that there is a requirement of separate administration for the regions of Kashmir and Jammu like the separate cabinets.
Mir stated that the chief minister has guaranteed the department to look into the matter and “make some arrangements soon’’.

The Minister said, “We have had undisturbed tourism seasons for the past three years and as more tourists are visiting, we need to put in place the essential infrastructure so that the tourists do not feel any annoyance.”

He also added, “We have been working hard to create a favourable environment. Still private investors are uncertain about the situation, but now there is consolation and we expect to see more infrastructure development.”

Mir said, that the department “is of the people and for the people” thus wants to see more public involvement in infrastructure expansion and rely less on government itself.

The minister further added that the quantity of tourists visiting the state “does not matter” and that the administration wants to attain superiority of services.
